Between the Grooves CD Reviews

by Hal Horowitz

This local guitarist, and to a lesser extent singer/songwriter, has one heck of a resume.  As guitarist with the Indigo Girls, he’s played Radio City Music Hall, and his credits also name-drop sessions with groups as disparate as The Band and Earth, Wind and Fire.

On his second solo EP, Tisdale shifts between pleasant jazz fusion to a more satisfying singer/songwriter pop-rock synthesis. Tisdale has a raspy but sensitive voice that works surprisingly well with his pop side, especially on the ballad “Bad Judge” which even includes lovely subtle orchestration.  The rock instrumentals that pepper this too short EP show Tisdale’s guitar dexterity in a sort of sub-Allman Brothers style.  We’ve heard it before, but when he hits on a bluesy riff and extrapolates from there, there’s no doubt just how good this guy is.

There’s enough variety on these seven tracks to show off Tisdale’s remarkable talents as a guitarist, and slightly less so as a singer/songwriter.
